When do they date from OG? I've never seen one.
Last of the World's Great Human Beings, well maybe one of the last? OK, just an ordinary slacker then.
Here's the page from the 1984 catalogue.

Within a couple years Altec and EV were part of the same company, the Altec ER's were then discontinued and replaced by EV's labeled as Altecs.
The Altec is labeled ER-10,12 etc
The EV relabeled as Altec will be labeled ER12L, etc.
Different speakers but often confused.

These are dated March of 1983. Thanks for your info, I haven't heard them yet but I'll report back.
It might well behoove we musical types to start accumulating 417s I think. Vastly underrated speaker by the thump and bump crowd. Ev's to my ears are darker. Nice, but no cut for the rhythm guy. When the overrated overpriced Celestion mystique fades, if ever, clean will be back. Let the amp do the dirty work, and besides, pushed hard enough, a 417 either alnico or ceramic will yeald musical distortion. I think the Celestion bit is as much about hiding sloppy playing as anything. Opinion again. No Altec or JBL will let you get away with much. But look at the price of D-120s. Holy Cow. 417s are a bargain.

The 417 has a strong cult following, I could sell 50 pairs if I had them.
My eBay guy just sold a pair needing recones.
I sold another pair a year or so back that I found.
Wish I had a pair of 425's for my Fender. It needs tens.
I think the EV is darker, agreed. They tried to remedy some of that with the 12S version, it has a boosted upper mid. Still not as bright as an Altec though.
If you've heard early Carlos Santana you've heard 417's. He used to hoard them.
The thing about the 417 is it is so clean and detailed. Too clean for many amateur players.
I had an old 70's Twin I had blackfaced with 417's but quit playing out, it's long gone and have been thru several amps since then.
I've been told I should play tenor guitar....tenor twelve miles away.

Just about any 417 or 425 will need to be re-coned...no matter
what the seller has said.
I've had GPA Re-cone over 10 from
the Eplay universe. Way back when I first joined here. :}
Love um & I debate the Haters' left and Right.
I defend the Faith! I am the MI guy.
I may be wrong!
